OLGA CHERNYSHEVA uses a range of media to produce expressive, penetrating artworks that take the contemporary Russian experience as their theme. Her often unwitting subjects are observed negotiating a society in turbulence, where the sense of a common future is rapidly dissolving. Her films, photographs, drawings and object-based works transcend their documentary function to lyrically investigate the very fabric of individuality and self-sufficiency, and to meditate on the role of the artist in a time of flux. Chernysheva has a vital interest in the relations between object and figure, in particular in the ways that architecture and people often seem to uneasily co-exist.
